Green Vientiane was the first and only civil society organization involved in addressing the plastic crisis in Laos as early as 2011. Since 2020, more organizations, particularly youth-led groups, have joined the effort by promoting cleanup campaigns. However, these initiatives often overlook the critical role of plastic producers and policymakers in finding long-term solutions.
The organization has collaborated with various stakeholders to develop strategies and raise awareness about the issue.
PIONEERING EFFORTS AND COLLABORATIONS
Green Vientiane has worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vientiane Municipal Management and Service Bureau, and international partners like the World Bank and European Union to develop Laos' National Plastic Action Plan (NPAP).
EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGNS AND WASTE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES
The organisation has produced educational cartoon videos and engaged in activities like song contests to raise awareness among the younger generation. They have also worked with organizations like Swisscontact and Plan International on clean-up initiatives and pilot projects.
POLICY ADVOCACY AND REGIONAL ENGAGEMENT
Green Vientiane has highlighted issues such as plastic waste imports from developed countries and engaged in dialogues with key plastic producers to promote Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies. They also participated in preparing Laos' position for the INC5 negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty.
